Description of the problem | The chrome/plastic selector part that allows the vehicle to be shifted to and from park and the other automatic gears is a known flawed honda design. The shift selector button failed yesterday on our 2017 crv. Due to the design being spring loaded, the broken part flew out of the shift selector and was lost temporarily. Lacking this broken part and being unable to reinsert it properly into the selector, the vehicle can't be moved into park and thus by honda design can't be turned off. This is both a fire and safety hazard that is well known to honda (they used the poor design on earlier accord and other models). When speaking with honda service and part department agents, they readily acknowledge the design flaw, are disappointed honda continued to use the hazardous design (it was a same problem in earlier models). Honda's response seems to be to let the selector buttons fail, keep a plentiful supply of replacements on hand in their parts departments and let the general public absorb the risks. This pattern and practice is both unsafe and unacceptable. Honda needs to design a more robust selector button and replace all current ones via a recall. |
