Description of the problem | While driving at highway speed on a 2-lane road, our jeep grand cherokee ecodiesel began to lose power. The lights on the instrument cluster began going off seemingly randomly, and the vehicle had to be quickly pulled over and put in a safe condition on the side of the road as the engine stalled. The engine would not restart. After 2 months of troubleshooting with chrysler engineering, our shop believes they have found the issue, which is a faulty tone wheel in the drivetrain, at where the engine couples to the transmission. The tone wheel lost about 1/4" of encoded magnetic material, and this made the vehicle inoperable, even while at highway speed. This failure threw no codes to the computer for the technician to interpret, and the only symptom is that the engine would not fire, even though, as a diesel, there is no spark ignition system. |
