Description of the problem | I was traveling at a 60mph speed on a highway when i noticed that my oil temp light came on and read 285 degrees in my options list yet the stationary oil temp read in the middle. I pulled over, let the engine cool, checked the oil and coolant (all fine). After 45 minutes, it cooled to about 130 degrees, so i continued on. I drove about a mile when it heated back up again, the jeep jerked, smoke started to come out of the engine, and it turned off. I luckily was able to turn into a parking lot before it died. Since i was out of state traveling and it was late in the evening, i needed to find a place to stay if my jeep would start (it did). I found a hotel 3 miles away from my location. The engine had cooled, i had opened the hood and saw no damage. I drove 35mph for the 3 miles as i watched the oil temp climb. I made it to the hotel, was parking when the cabin filled with smoke. I opened the windows, shut off the jeep and got out. I did see flames come out of the hood and something on fire fell from under the engine area. I called 911. Something in the engine compartment actually put the fire out before the fire department arrived. They still proceeded to douse the engine and disconnect the battery. I then found out there was a recall (w79) on the 2015 ecodiesel jeep grand cherokees for the (erg) exhaust gas recirculation coolers that are susceptible to thermal fatigue. This can cause the cooler to crack, allow preheated, vaporized coolant to interact with other hydrocarbons and air in the system that may lead to a vehicle fire. This recall was not scheduled to officially be released until december 31, 2020. 20 days after my jeep fire. |
