Description of the problem | Three events in 12 months of vehicle violent "wobble" (tracks side to side) while being towed by a class a (motorhome) at slow speed ~15 to 25 mph. Conditions preceding events include: 1) from a stop to moving after turning, usually 90 degrees, but not always, 2) dry asphalt pavement, and 3) sometimes after a road dip. Please note that other conditions may contribute/cause event, but the three events i've experienced, were under conditions stated above. Vehicle had less than 16,000 miles when the last event occurred, and more than 7,000 miles before first event. First occurrence while flat towing was after more than 3,000 miles of vehicle being towed. Notified jeep dealer - no help (no recalls, no tsb's, no recommended mitigation fix), reviewed many similar occurrences on various rv forums e. G. Irv2, fmca, and others. Took vehicle in for an alignment check at 16,000 miles and within oem specification. The vehicle movement is violent enough to transfer side-to-side forces into my 45', 46,000 lb. Mh (with tag axle). The you tube video ( https://www. Youtube. Com/watch? V=fwguajaeeci) accurately represents my experience. I am using roadmaster's sterling tow bar with an air force one (smi) supplemental braking system. The tow bar geometry and proportional braking system are setup according to oem requirements, i have owned five jeep gc's (2012 and earlier) and have flat-towed these without issue. Per the assistant editor at fmca, fca has refused to address the issue in the 2016 and newer gc's with electric steering, after recognizing the issue in the cherokee model after that model's conversion to electric steering. I have not experienced an accident and have not identified damaged equipment yet, however, lateral g-forces are significant enough to likely cause significant future component failure. |
