Description of the problem | Exhaust manifold header bolts are prone to breaking due to an incompatibility between the aluminum block and the cast iron header manifolds. They expand/contract at different rates causing the bolts to stretch and eventually break off causing a manifold leak, which reduces performance, decreases gas mileage and let's exhaust gasses enter the atmosphere without going through the catalytic converter. This occurred on the right side of the engine on my truck at 65,000 miles, and again on the left side at 78,000 miles. |
